I Never Beat Derby Girl
Introduction
Remember that old game Derby Girl? That old game you could only ever find on weird retro gameboy knock offs? Well you found a copy of the game! And 5 cheap consoles to play it on! They were always known for being flimsy.
Try to complete all three goals to win! Each time you take damage, the console gets a little more broken. When you lose buttons, you lose controls.
Try to flip around and collect points to get a high score! Be careful though, if you hit the ground while flipping you'll take damage.
About
This game was made for MiniJam #161. It was made in 72 hours, with the theme of Style, and the limitation of On a Budget. When I heard the limitation, I instantly wanted to do a papercraft style game. The thought process for the mechanics was simple. I brainstormed with my boyfriend late at night, and we came up with the idea that you play the game on a broken console. Where I struggled in the idea phase was what to do with the actual gameplay. I settled on a TonyHawk style game, since I thought that was pretty stylish. It fit the theme well.
What Was Left Out
Unfortunately, like most game jams, I didn't have the time to get everything done. I had planned on giving the hands little animations to show frustration whenever the player took damage, I wanted to increase the screen space, I wanted to add particle effects for the main character and for the console, and of course I didn't have any time to add any sounds. Which I am quite sad about, usually my games get to have some kind of sound, but it just wasn't in the time budget this go.
